Kalyves is a picturesque village and seaside resort 19km from Chania City. The village consists of two settlements, the medieval part which is located west of the square, and the new settlement to the east and surrounding hills. The village is built in one of the many fertile green valleys where the rivers of Xidas and Mesopotamos flow. The freshwater springs that emerge from the seabed combined with the rivers, keep the seawater fresh and cool .
The beach is divided by the river Xidas and stretches to the small picturesque harbour. To each side of the river there are two sandy beaches with shallow water. At the mouth of the river there is a lovely wooden bridge connecting the two beaches. The beaches are well organised with sun beds and umbrellas that belong to the cafes and tavernas along the beach. If it’s natural shade you’re looking for, you’ll find it under the trees that line the side of the beach. Across the street you will see an arched stone building that is a watermill dating back to the late period of the Venetian rule in Crete. Above the hill of the harbour there are the ruins of the fortress of Castel Apicorno. The Castel Apicorno was built by the Venetians during the second half of the 13th century to face the looming threat of the Turks.
