Location
Vamos is the most scenic of all villages in the region of Apokoronas. It lies 26km southeast of Chania and seven km away from Kalyves. It is a village that has kept all the authentic elements of the Cretan architecture of the old days. Stone-built, pitched roof houses with many wooden features, give to the place a very alluring character of authenticity. A number of shops are aligned to the main street. A bakery, a grocer, mini markets, two good tavernas as well as cafes, as well as a health center, a post office and a bank make the village completely self-dependent.
The old neighborhood of Vamos, which dates back many centuries, has been beautifully renovated with an old stone road leading to quaint buildings which house a small delicatessen shop and art cafe.
Just outside the village of Vamos, on the small road to Vrisses, are the ruins of the old Karidi Monastery and the ruins of the old oil mill with its 12 arches, built in 1862. Vamos was the site of the revolt against the Turkish rule in 1896. in 1995 a group of villagers obtained funding from the EU to fund a project which would in turn showcase crafts and produce of the region. This co-operative also helped to restore buildings of Vamos using traditional materials and crafts. The locals have also opened up shops and cafes where visitors can both sample and buy local products. The co-operative also has its own cafe-bar, round the corner from which is the venue for exhibitions, live music and not forgetting the spectacular terrace views. Their is also a tourist information office which can provide information on walking tours and cookery courses. Vamos also has a book shop which sells both new and second hand English books should the need arise.
